Graduation Photo Books

Scrapbooks and photo albums are popular ways to display photos at your graduation party. However, if scrapbooking isn’t your thing then they can be a lot of work and a lot of stress.

An alternative to traditional scrapbooking, especially if you have plenty of digital photos and if you like spending time on your computer, is to create a photo book through an online photo processor. Go to GraduationParty.com for more information on Graduation Photo Books and photo labs that offer them.

Graduation Photo Books

The first thing you need to do is decide what your book will include. Do you want to make it about your grad’s life, from baby to graduation? Do you want to include only his or her school years? Do you want to make it more recent and cover the high school years only? Or do you want to make it about their after school activities like clubs and sports?

You can create one all-inclusive book or you can create multiple books.

Most online photo processors offer a variety of sizes and styles. Here are some examples of the sizes that are available:

  • 12″ x 12″
  • 8″ x 11″
  • 8″ x 8″
  • 5″ x 7″
  • 4″ x 6″
  • 2″ x 3″

The minimum number of pages for most photo books is 20 pages and most page layouts allow you to use one to six (or more) photos. In many cases you can add additional pages at an extra cost. Some books allow you to have up to 150 pages or more.

You can use the same layout on every page or you can change the layout from page to page. In most cases you can also add headings, captions and/or text. The options are endless so make sure you check around to find a service that suits your needs.

If you are using digital photos make sure you use the highest resolution possible. The lower the resolution and the smaller the file size, the grainier the photo will be when it’s printed in the photo book. Also, if your photos are a lower resolution then you may be limited with how big you can make the photo in the photo book. The good news is that most online photo processors recognize the resolution of each photo and will give you a warning if you’ve selected a layout or print size that might be too big for the resolution of your photo.

If you have regular printed photos then you will need to scan them to your computer before you upload them. You can do this yourself if you have a scanner or you can ask a friend to do it. If you or a friend scan the photos make sure they are scanned at the highest resolution possible. If you have a lot of printed photos, scanning them yourself may take a lot of time so make sure you get started on this early.

Your local photo processing store may also offer scanning as a service. The photos will be scanned to a CD that you can upload to your computer and/or to the online photo processor. The resolution from professional services is usually quite good but make sure you ask them about this.

When creating your photo book you can include much more than just pictures. With a little work and creativity other mementos and keepsakes can be added as well:

  • Artwork – take digital photos of your grad’s artwork (paintings, sculptures, prints, molds, masks … anything you’ve saved over the years) or scan pieces if possible. Some artwork like pastels and chalk drawings may leave a residue on your scanner so be careful to check and clean your scanner after each piece.
  • Newspaper articles – scan newspaper articles and clippings or look for digital versions that might be available from the newspaper’s website and can be printed.
  • Certificates & Letters – scan certificates, letters of merit, letters of recognition, etc.
  • Programs – scan the covers and select pages (especially the ones acknowledging your grad) from the programs for recitals, plays and sporting events your grad particpated in.
  • Awards – scan awards or take digital photos
  • Medals – take digital photos
  • Schoolwork – maybe your grad has written some special pieces over the years – a poem, a short story, a speech. These can be scanned and included in your photo book. Some photo books will even let you type pages of text so your grad’s poem or story can be simply retyped into the book.

In fact, if your grad’s passion is art or creative writing then maybe you can create an entire photo book dedicated to this.

Another benefit to creating a photo book is that once it’s created you can order multiple copies. You can give one to your grad and keep one for yourself. Or how about grandma & grandpa? Perhaps they would like one as a keepsake, especially if they can’t make the graduation celebrations. Your grad could even give it to them as a special thank you.
